Bamboo Pavilion
Regional Context
Five monoliths rising 93 to 120 metres, joined by a panoramic sky bridge, anchoring a self-sustaining tourism node in New Shillong Knowledge City.
The five towers take their form from the Khasi and Jaintia monoliths, the standing stones raised across these hills to mark memory and lineage. Built as concrete cores clad in weathered Corten, they read as landscape before they read as building.
A sky bridge links them at height, and the interiors carry museum galleries, AV rooms, lounges and dining that put Khasi food and craft at the centre rather than the gift-shop margin.
Around them sits the wider destination: a theme park, event grounds, hotels and a convention centre, held together by cherry blossom avenues, stepped promenades, bamboo pavilions and a sculpture park.
I worked on the masterplan and the visualisation set as Designer and 3D Lead, developing the tourism zone within the larger 874-acre framework.
The work sat between two scales at once: the siting and silhouette of the towers against the ridgeline, and the ground-level sequence of arrival, promenade and pavilion that decides whether a landmark is actually worth walking through.
The scheme went on to receive the Grand Prix du Design Paris 2025 and a DNA Paris Design Award in 2026.
