Terrace and Water Court
Regional Context
A high street rather than a mall: 4.2 lakh square feet of craft retail, workshops and public rooms stepping down a Shillong hillside.
The brief asked for a mall. The scheme answers with a high street, broken into a run of smaller, varied, multi-purpose buildings that step with the slope instead of flattening it.
It sits in New Shillong Township between the State Legislative Assembly and the airport, and carries the One District One Product programme: craft and produce from every Indian state and all twelve Meghalaya districts, shown alongside the artisans who make them.
Water channels, pavilions, an amphitheatre, exhibition halls, workshops and food courts are threaded between the retail, so the public parts of the project work whether or not anyone is shopping.
As Designer and 3D Lead I worked the masterplan, streetscape and landscape together, resolving the level strategy that lets a hillside site stay walkable and accessible end to end.
Sustainability was handled in the fabric rather than bolted on: rainwater harvesting, native planting, renewable energy and natural ventilation, with the building depths set to make cross-ventilation actually work.
The scheme received an un Design Award in 2026.
